Onnalee is going to have surgery Tuesday, June 21st. We will be going to KC the 20th for some pre-op conferences, spend the night, then she will have her surgery the next day.

This is a surgery that she is going to need, but the surgeon's in Emporia & Topeka did not want to do it.

When Onnalee had her liver transplant she had to be opened up numerous times to clean out infection that had taken hold. The several surgeries which were emergency surgeries in nature left her muscle structure in her abdomen really compromised to the extent that now she has to deal with reoccurring hernias. This last hernia has made walking very difficult for her because muscular support in the abdomen has to be balanced with that in the back.

This may be pretty extensive as hernia surgeries go and of course, infection is still a concern with the drugs she has to take.

"Onnalee I am sending you the obituary for Joe Wiggins who died the first part of May. I didn’t see anything in the local papers about his death. I had an individual call me today, and she was at the Paradise Cemetery, and saw his grave. She was a friend of Joe’s and didn’t know he passed away. I don’t know if you knew Joe or not but he was a school administrator in Paradise years ago, and then left the area. He moved back to Paradise a few years ago, and lived here for a period of time. His wife Betty started having health problems and they wanted to move near health facilities in Salina, Kansas. They moved to Bennington, Kansas and she passed away a couple of years ago, and he started having serious health problems. He ended up in a nursing home before he died. Joe and Betty were great people.

BENNINGTON -- Kenneth Joe Wiggins, 74, of Bennington, died Monday, May 2, 2011, at Village Manor, Abilene. Joe was born Dec. 27, 1936, in Ringwood, Okla., to Ira and Pearl (Sears) Wiggins.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Joe held a master's degree in administration, and before his retirement, he was principal at Solomon Grade School. He was a member of United Church of Bennington.
.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo, on Nov. 7, 2007. Joe was also preceded in death by his stepdaughter, Judy Dufurrena.Survivors include his sons, Michael and Marty Wiggins; stepchildren, Bill McCoy, Glenda Smith and Jane Godshall; siblings, Dean, Harley, Robert, Don and Ramona; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
.
Funeral service was Friday at United Church of Bennington, with the Rev. Warren Cico officiating. Burial was in Mount Hermon Cemetery, Paradise.  Memorials may be made to the church.

UPDATE FOR CHARLES LANDIS

 I sent an email to Charles & Don and heard back from Don.  He gave us an update on Charles. . . .

"Charlie, continues to become stronger, but it is a slow process.
He remains in a skilled nursing facility and I don't know how much longer he will be there.
You asked about the tornadoes last week, the storms that contained them went north and south of us about 20 to 30 miles apart.  We dodged them again thankfully.

Thanks for writing and inquiring about Charlie."

Charles & Don, we continue to pray for both of you.
We realize that it IS a slow process to recover, but we are very Thankful that Charles is recovering and that you, Don,  are close enough to be with him during this time. 

It is good to hear that the tornadoes went around you and you were safe during that time.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Marvin Dwinelle; and sister, Betty McNeal. Survivors include two daughters, Deb Leiker, of Minneapolis and Richelle Leiker, of Salina; son, Josh Leiker, of Pittsburg, Kansas; special friend, Keyton Barker, of Sun City West, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Travis Leiker, Steven Watkins, Nicole Krob and husband Cody, Dustin Boatright and Zach Leiker; and five great-grandchildren, Elijah, K’lee, Ashlyn, Camrin and Natasha.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth. Memorials may be made to the Paradise Methodist Church or Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, Salina in care of the mortuary.

PLEASE PRAY FOR CONNIE (HUDNALL) JAHNKE AND HER HUSBAND, BILL

Connie (Hudnall - Class of 1962) Jahnke's husband, Bill, was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, Creutzfeldt-Jakob, more commonly known as mad cow disease. 
Bill's illness is the result of cancer and not tainted beef.  This disease is very rare and it took quite a while for the doctors to diagnose it.  He was moved yesterday to Casa de la Luz, a hospice facility in Tucson, where they live.

Connie met Bill in Tucson in the spring of 2009 and they were married that year in December.  They have only been married 16 months.

A FEW FACTS ABOUT PARADISE, KANSAS USA

.

Paradise was founded in 1889.
.

Originally it was named Ivamar, who according to legend, was a beautiful and popular young woman in the city.
The city was renamed "Paradise" after a hunting expedition led by James Meade stumbled upon the village, having trekked through miles of burnt prairie. On the other side of a creek was green grass, which looked like a paradise to the hunters, and thus the name was changed.

Paradise is located at an elevation of 1,693 feet.
It lies in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains approximately 6 miles north of the Saline River on the north side of Paradise Creek, a tributary of the Saline, immediately west of the creek's confluence with Eagle Creek, which runs south along the city's east side  Located in north-central Kansas 3.5 miles west of U.S. Route 281 on K-18.  Paradise is approximately 127 miles northwest of Wichita, 233 miles west of Kansas City, and 15 miles north-northwest of Russll, the county seat. 
 
As of the census  of 2000, there were 64 people, 28 households, and 16 families residing in the city.
 
K-18, an east-west route, approaches Paradise from the northwest, then turns east north of the city. Paradise Road, a paved county road, enters the city from the south.
 

Paradise is home to several unique structures that were constructed from Post Rock Limestone.  Early settlers to the area discovered that while there was a shortage of timber, limestone was plentiful, and therefore it was commonly used as a building material. It was also commonly used for fence posts. The watertower and the former Kennedy Hotel were recently added to the National Register of Historic Places and featured in an article in the Salina Journal.

AN UPDATE ON CHARLES LANDIS FROM DON

Charles is currently in a skilled medical facility to overcome a recent bout of pneumonia. He is obtaining occupational, physical and speech therapy to aid in his recovery. He is walking further everyday as he is becoming stronger. Once his strength has recovered to an acceptable level he will be moved to a rehab center and remain there until he is able to go home. When he is able to go home he will then begin his chemo treatments.
Charles' parents Delbert and Veta Landis keep in contact with him and his brothers Delmar and Don by telephone on a regular basis.

A MESSAGE FROM NORMAN LAUGHLIN

I received this from Norman about his and Iva's Mother. She died 3-25-11.
.
"Onnalee, I brought Mom, Elaine Laughlin, here to Redding, CA about 9 months ago so I could have her closer to me. She was living in an assisted living facility, Lavender Hills, when she became ill. She had been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure in January of 2011 and had been in the hospital for several days in Jan, again in Feb. and then the final time this month. She was in the hospital the final time for a little over three days and the last day and a half she was non-responsive. We talked to her and I really believe she could hear us but she was too weak to respond in any way. She passed peacefully and the "comfort care" that the hospital staff provided kept any pain she may have had to a minimum. Mom requested that we not have any formal services and that she be cremated in CA and shipped to her niece in NE for internment in the cemetery where her family has all been buried. So, we will carry out her wishes.

HENRY HOWARD SCOTT - RUSSELL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE - 1942

Henry Howard Scott,
passed away peacefully and with dignity
on
March 26, 2011
after a brief illness.
Howard was born in Russell County, Kansas
on
February 8, 1924
to
Jessie (Herron) Scott and Allen Ray Scott.
He graduated from Russell High School in 1942.

Howard was a WW II veteran, a member of the Greatest Generation. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Corps in 1943 where he flew as a radioman/gunner on a B-24 Liberator Bomber based in Brazil and England. He and his crew members hunted German submarines out on the open ocean. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Howard returned to Russell County after his military service where he began his lifelong connection with farming and ranching. On October 17, 1948, he married Vernita Bartlett and together they continued farming and ranching. To this union were born four children: Vickie, Rhonda, Greg and Denise. Howard and Vernita moved to Russell, Kansas in 1981. Despite living in town, Howard leased a few acres outside of Russell where he raised a few head of cattle maintaining his passion for the outdoors. Howard was preceded in death by Vernita in June, 2004 after fifty-five years of marriage.

Howard married Vicki Dougherty on April 22, 2006. Howard continued his enthusiasm for the outdoors with Vicki by landscaping their Russell home. He spent countless hours on their back patio sipping coffee and watching the birds. Howard worked part-time for the Russell Livestock Commission from 1948 to 2000. He was a fifty year member of the Paradise Pitch Club. He was an avid reader of western novels and loved to work crossword puzzles. He enjoyed spending time with his siblings and shared coffee many mornings with his oldest brother Rich. Howard was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Elks Lodge. Howard was a true patriot who loved his country.

His greatest legacy was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He never met a stranger and he shared his talents and riches freely with others. His connection to the earth, what it produces, and the life it sustains will always be remembered.

He is survived by his second wife, Vicki (Dougherty) Scott of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Vickie Elliott (husband Kendall) of Russell, Kansas; daughter, R. Lee Burkholder (husband Jeff) of Columbus, Ohio; son, Greg Scott (wife Debbie) of Salina, Kansas; Denise Hahn (husband Chris) of Olathe, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. Howard also has five siblings surviving: Richard Scott, Bessie Maranville, Ruth Bartlett, Don Scott and Carol Murphy. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vernita, his parents, a brother Glenn Scott, and a sister, Mary Ann (Scott) Melasecca.

A celebration of Howard’s life
was held at
11:00 A.M.  March 30, 2011
at the
Paradise United Methodist Church in Paradise, Kansas
with
Pastor Sharon Thomas officiating.

Burial is in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery in rural Paradise.

Iva Byrd just called me and she wanted me to pass along that her and Norman's step mother, Elaine Laughlin, passed away this morning in Calif. She was 91.
Iva just got home from the hospital. They found out that a medicine she had been taking for a long time was causing her stomach to bleed. It was absorbing the blood droplets so they couldn't figure out where the blood was going. She thinks she is improving now.

I loved the blog about the Wylie Martin's today.
Do you have the Paradise Farmer on microfilm or fiche? And you have a list of mayors!!!! I knew there had to be some city records somewhere, but I never have time to check at the courthouse when we're in the area.

When you read about Ed Helms in the Farmer, he is my Grandma Hutchcraft's dad, so he is my great granddad. I believe he is a former mayor. I know he was a lawman for awhile.

So interesting that Mr. Martin was hired to supervise the Chinese RR workers.

Keep up the good work. Even if sometimes it is just obituaries we still need to know about them.

.Wylie and Clara Martin were married in 1905.

In 1909, they moved to Paradise.

Wylie was to work there as a Foreman in building the railroad that was coming to Paradise.

Many of the men building the railroad were Chinese and it was felt that Wylie could manage them well.

.

Wylie was a real go-getter. He worked as a carpenter, then operated an automobile service station and Ford agency which he built himself in Paradise with the help of his son. He then returned to carpentry.

.

By reading the Paradise Farmer, Wylie is recorded as doing most any job from setting up windmills to making cement forms to masonry. He was also involved with the WPA building of the Paradise water tower that stands on a corner of his land.

He also served in the Kansas State Guard 1917-1919.

I'm not sure of the time line of these, but according the the Paradise Farmer, Wiley started clerking at the Harrell Hardware Store in 1920.

He was mayor of Paradise for a number of years.

(In one of my books about Paradise, I have a list of all the mayors. Do you think I could find it now? No! But, I will add the years at a later date, hopefully.)

Clara was always busy with quilting, embroidering and crocheting. She crochet the dress that she was buried in. (Shown in the last picture above.)

She was also a sharpshooter who would go on the jackrabbit kills with the men.

He was a milker of cows - using a one-legged stool that he would pivot all around on in order to accomplish his task.

Clara and Wylie are buried in Mt Hermon cemetery - just to the right of the entrance to it.

Wylie apparently bought some of the first lots. Their graves were dug by friends and neighbors as a mark of respect. Wylie never seemed to get over the idea of having to pay someone to dig a grave.

"Thanks for asking about Charlie. He was re-admitted to the hospital for developing pneumonia. He is on antibiotics. Hopefully he will be able to return to rehab shortly. Keep him in your thoughts and prayers."
