TEXASCHILICOOK - CLASS OF 1961

.
One question . . . .
Who in the class of      Click on → Class of 1961       is texaschilicook?

Read his/her comment on the left - latest comment.

Millard and I are very curious.  By way of deduction - after looking at the Class picture -  is the texaschilicook Stanley Pitt or Lyle Oswald?  You are driving us crazy!
.

OK!  Another deduction.
None of the 1961 graduates listed in the Paradise Directory are from San Antonio, Texas.
However, Stanley Pitts is not listed.  Stanley is it YOU?

.
.
Read the new comment to the left - or Click on Class of 1961  above - and you will see it is Stanley Rex Pitts.
Stanley, evidently they don't have an address for you for our Paradise directory but I'm sure they would love to update the directory - with your name in it with the Class of 1961 - for the June (or is it July?) 2014 reunion.  It won't be updated until next year but feel free to send your address anytime so we can get it to Deb, Dan & Eric.  You can send it to my email address if you would care to.  Thanks so much for the comment so we can be in contact with you.
My email address is under the Paradise Water Tower at the top left.

PUTTIN' UP THE FLAG

.
Our news has been very dismal the last few weeks.
Also, I have not  been very creative with finding something to put on this blog.
However, I received this in an email this morning and thought . . . we really need to enjoy and appreciate our freedom.
God Bless each of you and I still appreciate each of you for checking in on the blog daily.

Our counter has decided to quit, but the blog has an internal counter on it so I will get this to working as soon as possible.

We are very blessed! We can disagree but still get along! Right?
We are all free to put up Our Flag!

RUSSELL COUNTY

.
While we were on facebook a week or two ago Millard found a video about Russell County.  After looking into it, I found that it was posted on a profile named Russ Co.
He is a fictional character.
Russ Co is the Russell County Promoter! He loves to hunt, fish, ride bike trails, help harvest Kansas wheat, and pump Russell County oil! He supports Russell County events, communities and businesses!

We thought you would enjoy the video too.  We are very impressed.
I would like to know where the picture was taken that had the green hills and trees.

Can anyone identify it?  Beautiful!

If you are on facebook, type in Russ Co, and click on "Like."  Enjoy!

We received this comment from Mike Shaw this morning.  If anyone can help Mike we would appreciate your thoughts.  He is referring to the post I had sometime ago about the Club 50 book.

This is Mike Shaw that graduated at Gridley Rural High in 1969 , Gridley Ks and I scored 51 pts against Westphalia Ks on 1-15-1969 and 49 pts against Strong City Ks the next nite. The date of this could be wrong, but the scores are right. Was wondering why I was not in the Club 50 book????
email me a mshaw14@cox.net, thanks Mike Shaw

MARY (PFORTMILLER) FINK

.
In Memory of

Mary Eleanor Fink
May 16, 1937 - January 27, 2013

Mary Fink was born May 16th 1937 in Hays, Kansas. Her mother Ellie and father Dick raised Mary and her older brother Glen in the small town of Fairport Kansas where Dick worked on oil rigs, but unfortunately did not own any. As a teenager, Mary rode the bus to a near-by small town named Paradise. And yes there is a Paradise in Kansas. Mary attended Paradise high school where she was a cheerleader, a basketball player, and a homecoming queen. That's where she met her high school sweet heart and life-long partner of 57 years, Bob. They got married fresh out of high school and two years later Mary gave birth to her first daughter Lucinda followed two and half years later by their second daughter, Tonya.

As a young family, they lived in a purple trailer house next to the gas station that Bob owned and operated and supported the family. This was a when gas was 18 cents a gallon. Never to be one out of fashion, Mary always attired her daughters in cute and carefully planned matching outfits. Every summer, the Fink's, like every honest baseball fanatical family took a two week vacation to Kansas City to watch the A's play baseball. They always managed to be there when the Yankees were in town. During these trips the two young and well-dressed daughters were strongly encouraged to collect baseball autographs from players to which they could not dare be denied, including Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle.

In 1966 enticed by some actual landscape, Bob and Mary left Paradise and moved their family to Colorado. In Colorado, Bob and Mary added a surprise to the young family with the addition of their son Pat, their baseball player. The Fink's settled into a nice 3 bedroom house of their own in Edgewater and sent their kids to Lumberg elementary and Jefferson high school. Bob worked as a salesmen and Mary continued to raise her kids while juggling jobs at the elementary school and May D&F (where she thoroughly enjoyed a discount on clothes and purses). After her kids grew up, at age 40, Mary got a job working for the Federal Government as an administrator for USGS. Anybody that knew Mary knew she had a strong work ethic. She worked at her job for over 30 years and retired at age 73, almost two years ago.

Outside of fashion and work, Mary most enjoyed sports and travel. Together Bob and Mary earn the title to be rightfully considered -- sports nuts. Not only did they root hard for their favorite professional and college teams, they were always right there in the stands and on the sidelines for their kids and grandkids sporting events. Mary took her baton-twirling daughter Tonya across the country coming home with a car full of trophies each time. She tirelessly attended and drove to all of her son Pat's baseball, basketball and football games and hardly ever missed her grandchildren's lacrosse or hockey games even if she and Bob had to drive to another state. When Tonya was the featured Baton twirler during halftime of the football games, CU gained two full time football fans that never missed a home game and travelled all over the country to watch the Buffs compete along with their other favorite teams, the Red Sox and the Rockies. Their travelling was not just limited to sports. Bob and Mary travelled all over the world with their best traveling buddies Don & Shirley Moran to places like Germany, France, Ireland, Brazil, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and many other places. Bob's job for Continental Airlines allowed them to go to New York City or San Francisco for a Sunday afternoon lunch and a Broadway play.

Mary always enjoyed spending time with her dog, Fenway, her family, her friends, her sports teams and meeting new people that she could share her gift of gab with. Mary's life came to an end a couple of weeks ago on January 27th 2013. As we now know, Mary concealed her illness from family for the last few years and she even attended 75 of the 81 Rockies games just last summer. Mary's goal was to survive through this last Christmas holiday. Mary will always be remembered for treasuring her family and friends, meeting new people, not wanting to have her picture taken, and her trademark two holiday pies per one person.

Mary is survived by her loving husband; Bob, children; Lucinda (John) Schneller, Tonya (Pat) Osbaugh, Patrick FInk, grandchildren; Tyson Schneller, Tanner Schneller, Joe Osbaugh, and her beloved dog; Fenway.

THANK YOU ADMINISTRATOR'S

.
A special Thank You to our two other Administrator's for putting on the last post - Donnie's update from Duane.  My computer has had a virus and the virus just keeps coming back in a different way so our computer technician had to take itmy computer to the shop.  I am just hoping I don't lose everything but I might.  I don't click on a lot of links but I do use Google Images frequently to put pictures on this blog or facebook.  Sometimes a picture that I didn't ask for would come up.  Although I would click out very quickly, I am thinking that I need to stop using this.

Back to our Administrators - One of them posted it because the other one said the he must do it.
Great team, right?

Update on Donnie Miller

Hello Onnalee -----The following is very good news for Donnie and for all those praying for her!!.
Donnie received current cancer test results today at Tammy Walker Cancer Center in Salina. The results were very good, with a cancer count of 6.4 and having dropped from the previous test of 18.
Donnie went to KU Medical Center November 14, 2012 for Internal Radiation Therapy- using SIR-Spheres. She did not have chemotherapy leading up to the radiation and has not had any since. The cat-scan from last week did not show any shrinkage of the tumor, but that could change over the next three of four months. The most important point today was that the radiation did kill cancer cells.
The Oncology Doctor advised Donnie, she is the first patient he has sent to KU Med for this method of radiation treatment and it has worked!!. The next appointment is March 23rd.

UPDATE FOR DONNIE (MARTIN) MILLER FROM DUANE

I received this from Duane this afternoon.

Dear Onnalee

On February 14 Donnie will have had five years of cancer treatment. It began about 4AM when I checked on her and she was nearly unconscious. I called 911 and she was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The following day the Doctor told her she had cancer. Donnie decided immediately to go to Mayo Clinic and get the best possible treatment and advice. We got a flight out of Wichita and had to change planes at Minneapolis. When we got to Minneapolis Donnie was too sick to walk. Finally getting across the terminal and on board the airplane, it was midnight and the temperature was several degrees below zero. Nobody should fly in North country in the winter. I had a room booked at a hotel that was connected to Mayo Clinic. Donnie was getting pneumonia. There was no heat in the room!!. At 3Am it was not easy to get a room change, but finally did. The next afternoon Donnie met with the Doctor at Mayo to schedule a biopsy. He immediately arranged with the Hospital ER to have Donnie examined by a MD. The ER MD had her admitted to the hospital and put on antibiotics. The next day I moved to a hotel near the hospital. Two weeks later Donnie met with a couple of Mayo Doctor's. They told her she was overweight, diabetic, had a cancerous tumor in the colon and a cancerous mass in the liver. She could have six months to live! . I rented a car to drive back home.
.
Since that discouraging beginning Donnie has been getting all of her treatment and advice from Tammy Walker Cancer Center at Salina, She has been on Chemotherapy with breaks ever since. Between valentines day in 2008 and the 2008 Paradise class reunion Donnie had surgery to remove the colon tumor. It was an emergency situation to have the surgery and she was in the hospital at Salina for three weeks. I never reported those early events on the blog because I didn't have those Fairport friends of Donnie's running shot-gun over me to make sure it was reported!!
.
I think the important point for readers on the blog that have cancer, is to get the best advice and treatment available, but humans do not determine life span. Donnie has far exceeded expectation . In this time she celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. Five grandchildren have been born with the youngest being twins, born last July 2nd. She especially enjoyed the awesome toddler spirit in our house at Christmas.
.
Life span is in God's hands. I recommend to those of you with cancer to get all the prayer partners you can. Live a plentiful life like it is not going to end and if it gets you into trouble make sure it was fun!!!! That's how Donnie is doing it!!!!.

Many thanks,
Duane

Donnie, and Duane too, have been on our prayer list for these past few years - since we first heard about Donnie having cancer.  We are so sorry that she has had to go through this but we marvel at her positive attitude.
We also Praise God for giving her the desire and strength to go through this adventure in her life.  As unpleasant and undesirable as it has been, Donnie certainly has been living her life to the fullest.  She is amazing!
We also have so much admiration for Duane.  He has been beside her all these years with much love, concern, care, support and adoration at all times.
Much love and many prayers for Donnie & Duane.

Donnie is now on facebook, so I posted this tribute to her and Duane today.

Donnie Miller and her husband Duane Miller are the most admired people of the day.

Donnie has had cancer for 5 years and it has been a giant roller coaster for them. I have never heard them complain, they only rejoice at how appreciative they are for Donnie's life. She lives from day to day not knowing what is in store but that something good is going to happen. They don't sit in gloom and discouragement but in hope and thankfulness for what is happening and what is going to happen. Our Love and our Prayers continue to be with Donnie (Martin) and Duane Miller. They would appreciate your prayers too.

You can read more about her on the Paradise Blog.

PARADISE CLASS OF 1932

.

When I received all the Class photos last summer, some of us had a discussion about this Class picture.  Notice that Carl Strecker's picture was inserted in the picture.
We learned that Carl got an infection from getting cleated playing football.
Penicillin and antibiotics, as we know them today and take for granted, did not exist at that time.  Because of this football injury, Carl died.  That was the end of football until around 1969.
Would anyone like to add anything to this story?

2013 HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Another Year Is Dawning

Another year is dawning,
Dear Master, let it be,
In working, or in waiting,
Another year with Thee.

Another year of mercies,
Of faithfulness and grace;
Another year of gladness
In the shining of Thy face.

Another year of progress,
Another year of praise,
Another year of proving
Thy presence all the days.

Another year of service,
Of witness of Thy love,
Another year of training
For holier work above.

Another year is dawning,
Dear Master, let it be
On earth, or else in heaven
Another year for Thee.

(Thanks to my great nephew, Aaron Leonard - from Washington,  for seeing my "Help Me" sign.)  Brad belongs to GWRRA group in Hutchinson.  I thought they wrote up a nice article in the Kansas Winger newsletter.  Thanks Brad!

Motto...
"Safety is for Life"

Mission...
" To Save Lives Through Quality, World Class Education"

"Something tells me it’s not very long until you bet-ter have heated gear if you want to ride in comfort. So far this month we’ve had about any kind of temperature except for real cold. Our supper ride this month was pretty short. When we met at the Kwik Shop, nobody was in the mood to go too far and it was a bit cool so we decided to go to McFarland’s for supper. We had 4 bikes and one car with a total of 8 people. The dinner was very good and we didn’t get asked to leave even though it appeared Al Davis was trying to accomplish that by harassing the server. She was a good sport and chose to ignore him as best she could. We did manage to be able to supply several different “war” stories and to also pass on best wishes to Al & Sandy and also Ron and Marjie for their anniversa-ries the next day.

On the 10th we made what has become the annual ride to Paradise, KS for turkey dinner. It was our third trip and each one has been better than the last. We had 4 bikes with 8 people. Three bikes from Chapter C and were joined by Mike and Dawn Quintanar from Manhattan on their GL1800. The roads to Paradise are very straight; however the turkey dinner (all the fixings and all made from scratch) makes up for the lack of twisties. The folks in Paradise really make us welcome and treat us great. Last year we mentioned it was a bit problematic parking on the graveled hill near the school gym. One of the ladies said she knew the perfect place for us to park and would take care of it for next year. As we rode into town they had signs posted for “ motorcycle only parking” and almost directly in front of the building. We were surprised they remembered that from a year before but we made sure to thank them for being so kind.

This is what I call being nice, the dinner was in the building in the background.

We stopped at the entrance sign to Paradise. Don’t blink or you will miss the whole town, permanent population 45 give or take.

While we were riding on K-18 both to and from Paradise we invented a new game made almost ex-clusively for the plains states. We tried to keep track of the number of tumbleweeds that hit our bikes. It was agreed that Jamie and Gayle Conway are “The Tumbleweed Magnets” to go along with their established reputation for attracting hail. Ja-mie got hit by at least 4 tumbleweeds while the rest of us were lucky enough to only get hit once each. Did I mention it was a bit breezy?
We were guessing the wind was blowing at least 40 mph about all the time. I finally decided to see how accurate our guess was and called the phone number at the Manhattan airport to see what the wind was and it worked out to about 38 mph. From experience that had to mean it was a bit higher out west as Salina normally has stronger wind at their airport than Manhattan. As was agreed upon by all the riders and co-riders if you are going to ride in Kansas don’t complain about the wind.

Just to mix things up on the way back our new found friends were planning on splitting off and going some geocaching on their way back to Man-hattan. It sounded interesting to the rest of us so we had Mike lead and stopped at four different lo-cations along our route and had an enjoyable time finding the “stuff” we needed to find.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING - THANK YOU PARADISE ALUMNI

.

Random act of Kindness is a selfless act performed by a person or people wishing to either assist or cheer up an individual person or people.  The phrase may have been coined by Anne Herbert, who says that she wrote “Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty on a place mat at a restaurant in 1982 or 1983.

I have been very blessed this past week and have had the privilege to see the “Random Acts of Kindness” at work.  The wonderful part - it has been happening with our Paradise Alumni as participants - giving and receiving.

There is so much beauty and inspiration watching this magic in kindness transpire through emails between friends.  What a blessing for me to watch all the actions and plans transpire.

DONNIE (MARTIN) MILLER'S APPOINTMENT CHANGED

.
Donnie's appointment at KU Medical Center has been changed to Nov. 14th at noon.
Please continue to pray for Donnie & Duane - especially on the 14th.

Donnie and Duane are so thankful that their grandchildren (their children too) live near them.  It is such a pain reliever to have grandchildren close to you.  Cancer seems to always be a continuing effort towards pain control.  Getting a call from a grandchild asking if they can come over to play is the best medicine of all.

Thank You for your prayers and please continue to pray often.
