Onnalee

I received this from Millard this morning

I guess I had better bring you up to speed on what is happening here. Onnalee is in the hospital at Topeka. She began getting sick Thursday of last week. Lots of stomach pain, nausea etc. and could not eat. Finally she got weak enough that she could not get up. She was transported to the Emporia hospital and from there to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. X-rays showed that there was a couple of kidney stones blocking one of her kidneys and caused infection to develop. They were able to remove one stone. The other stone was pushed back up into her kidney and a stint installed so that hopefully it will be able to pass on out now. If it doesn’t, they will have to go back in and/or do something to break it up.

Jim, she is very sick. The Dr. told me that it would be a long recovery for her. With all of her other problems, I am pretty concerned and a little frightful about the future. Things do not look to good right now. I will plan to work at the pharmacy this morning and then probably go to Topeka soon as I get off around noon. Would appreciate your prayers.

The pictures are in the file at the Heritage Museum in Natoma. They are always looking for pictures and would appreciate it if anyone could send them pictures.
Roger Pruter and Dan Hoisington are working on a Paradise display for the Museum.

I am in the process of trying to find out the year(s) these pictures were taken.
Thank You Marie for sending these to Ed and Thank You Ed for sending them to us.

PARADISE BAZAAR & TURKEY DINNER - NOV. 8TH

134531        134631    135439
.
Annual Paradise United Methodist Church

This is one gathering in Paradise that everyone looks forward - the women preparing for the day and the people that get to enjoy the great food, fellowship and visiting with many friends.  The Bazaar & Turkey Dinner started in 1950 to raise money for a new Methodist church and it is the church's only fundraiser.

Although it is like an annual reunion, they do get a lot of hunters, with a lot of them actually go out of their way to go there to eat.

Another attraction to the Bazaar this year will be the sale of the book "Simply Paradise."

The book is in four sections:
Section 1 - Ivamar to Paradise - Contains history of town, some businesses, etc along with photos;
Section 2 - Paradise Methodist church - Again contains history of church, list of past ministers, photos, etc.;
Section 3 - Mt. Hermon Cemetery - Features maps of cemetery and listing of all burials. We walked the cemetery in June, 2014 and recorded information on stones;
Section 4 - Paradise Schools - Incudes history of schools, photos and all senior placards (senior photos).

The book will sell for $20 plus an additional $5 if mailed.

Carolyn Schultz wishes to Thank everyone for their help with this project.
Mail orders will be sent out AFTER the November 8th Paradise bazaar.
You may send a check for $25.00 if you would like to order the book and would like to have it sent.

A couple of weeks ago Kim Hoisington (Dan & Mona's daughter-in-law) sent these articles to me.  It is so thoughtful when people think of this blog when they read something.  Thank You Kim - and Dan too.
Kim wrote . . . .
"Dan and I found these while going through Mt Hermon cemetery papers and thought they we"re interesting.

Dan thought "Swede" graduated from Paradise in 35 or 36.

Have a great afternoon!

Kim"

These two articles are typed below.

I typed the Paradise Farmer, as I thought it was somewhat hard to read.  It was very interesting.

Dorothy Marie (Hudnall) Wilson died at her home in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, following a short illness. She was 84 years old.
Dorothy was born on Jan. 5, 1930, in Fairport, Kansas, to Harry E. and Laura M. (Miller) Hudnall. She had an older brother, Harry Jr. (Bud) whom she idolized. Her mother died when Dorothy was only two years old. Her father later married Edra Mae Brown, who was never a step-mother but always a loving mother to Dorothy and Bud. From this union Dorothy was blessed with a brother, Harold, and two sisters, Karen and Connie, whom she cherished and watched over.

She met Robert Christopher Wilson while in Lincoln and they were married there on Feb. 12, 1954. Dorothy always considered Bob her best friend. To this union, two daughters were born; Diane Marie and Robin Sue.

The family moved to McCook in 1960. Dorothy worked as an administrative assistant for several businesses, including Kansas-Nebraska Gas Co., McCook City Library, Southwest Sales and Service, and Mousel Engineering. Her secretarial skills and attention to detail made her a valued employee and she counted her co-workers as dear friends. The family moved to North Platte in 1978 when she was transferred with Mousel Engineering. After retiring, Bob and Dorothy moved back to McCook. Dorothy moved to Lincoln in 1995.

Dorothy was a long-time member of Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook where she was a member of Circle 7 and taught the three-year-old Sunday School class for over 13 years.
Dorothy loved reading, watching Husker football, spoiling her grandchildren, and following city, state, and national politics. She was known for the wonderful letters and notes that she sent to family and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Wilson; parents, Harry and Laura Hudnall; step-parents, Orval and Edra Otte, and older brother, Harry (Bud) Hudnall.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Philip Lyons of McCook and Robin and Jeff Szwanek of Lincoln; five grandchildren, Laura (Aaron) Plas of York, Nebraska, Andrea (Joshua) Johnson of Lincoln, Christopher Lyons of Seattle, Washington, Julia (Brad) Krebs of Gretna, Nebraska, and Doug (Libby) Szwanek of Lincoln; her great-grandchildren, Cooper, Kennedy, and Adlee Plas of York and Lennon, Porter, and Baby Krebs of Gretna; her brother, Harold (Velda) Hudnall of Great Bend, Kansas; sisters, Karen (Keith) Jakub of Derby, Kansas, and Connie Jahnke of Tucson, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
.
Dorothy requested there be no funeral service. Her ashes will be interred later in the Luray, Kansas, Cemetery between her mother and her father. The family requests that any memorials be given to the McCook Library Foundation, P.O. Box 602, McCook, NE 69001.

TIME TO BRAG ON MY HUSBAND - MILLARD HARRELL - CLASS OF 1959

130366
.
Congratulations to my husband
(Millard Harrell)

The 2014 Fall Issue of the Woodcarving Illustrated magazine (Fox Chapel Publishing Co.) with his article “Carve a Welcoming Wood Spirit” AND with a picture of his Wood Spirit is on the front cover.  Wow!  What an honor!

Front Cover

First page of article - page 37

Last page of article - page 43

He received an email from Woodcarving Illustrated in June  stating that they were getting the 2014 Fall Issue ready and Millard’s wood spirit instructional article would be in that magazine.
From Bob Duncan . .
.
“Hi Millard,
We're finishing up preparing the article for our art department (we're planning on putting it in the Fall issue). As Mindy's making the final pass over the article, she commented that "Millard's instructions and photos are crazy good. We need more stuff from him."

So... I'm reaching out to see if and what you'd be interested in doing an article on for 2015. Furthermore, would you be interested in coming to our open house/woodworking show in 2015 (May 8-9) and teaching a class in facial anatomy?”

That folks is a prestigious honor in the field of woodcarving.  Millard is highly recognized nationally for his facial expressions – especially the eyes.

Millard did an article on carving Santa’s in the Holiday edition of Woodcarving Illustrated in 2010.
The news about it was on Millard’s Foundwood Carving blog.

2010 Millard's Woodcarving Article in Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine

Thanks for the comment Dan Hoisington . . . . . .  (He thinks he is my Star student. Don't tell him any differently.)   Smiling!
"Congrats to Millard on the magazine article!!!  As was mentioned, the first thing I noticed were the eyes.  Hoe does he do that?  Also, as mentioned about the mouth being hidden by the beard,  the spirit looks to have a pleasant expression on his face.  I can not figure out how he did that either.  Millard really does a masterful job!!
