I received this today from Carolyn Shultz. I would like to say right now that she has our permission to use any picture or story on this "Paradise Blog" for information that she would like to use. It sounds very exciting to me. Thank You Carolyn.
Her email . . . . .
"Onnalee and Millard:
First let me introduce myself - I am the former
Carolyn Finkenbinder, born and raised in Waldo and a 1960 graduate. Now on to
the important stuff!!!
After spending 25 years with the Lucas newspaper I
retired about 10 years ago and began a project of preserving the history of the
area. My daughter and I have completed a number of books in that field. We do
everything from research to printing so we are not real well-known. Recently
(well actually about two years ago) we were asked if we could put together a
book on Paradise. We have completed books for Waldo, Lucas and Luray as well as
several "gone but not forgotten" communities in southern Osborne county. The
books consist of photos of the senior placards, list of all alumni member, old
photos of the towns, interesting old newspaper stories, church history, map of
the cemetery and listing of all burials. We actually walk the cemetery and
record information from the stones. We are not limited to this set of items but
find the school, church and cemetery are the most important places to most
residents.
I have started gathering this information with the hopes of
having the book completed by the annual church bazaar. My reason for contacting
you is to ask if you have any old photos you would be willing to share. I have
enjoyed your website for some time and Dan Hoisington suggested I contact you to
check on photos and information.
Hoping to hear from you soon. Thank you
and God Bless.

DONALD J. HABERER - CLASS OF 1955
.
Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary
Donald J. Haberer
76,
life-long Russell County resident
passed away
Wednesday, March 12, 2014,
at
Salina Regional Medical Center
in the embrace of his family.
Don was a loving husband, proud
father, and doting grandfather as well as a committed member of the Russell
community.
.
Don was born June 3, 1937, to Emil and Mary Lorraine (Salber) Haberer at Hays Protestant Hospital, Hays, Kansas. His early years were spent in rural Russell County along the Saline River in Paradise Township.
.
His education began there at Fay School, District No. 51, and culminated with his graduation from Paradise Rural High School in 1955. He was Class Valedictorian. He attended Fort Hays State College for three semesters in the years 1955 to 1957 before volunteering and being inducted into the U.S. Army. His induction ceremony took place in Kansas City, Missouri, on March 1, 1957. After seven days at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, he did eight weeks of Basic Training at Ft. Lewis, Washington, and eight weeks of Advanced Training at Ft. Ord, California. He was eventually assigned to the Criminal Investigation Detachment at Fort Polk, Louisiana, as a Clerk/Typist. On November 7, 1957, he began his deployment in Berlin, Germany, with the Army of Occupation where he served until February 12, 1959. His duties in Berlin included guarding Nazi war criminals in Spandau prison. After 20 months of service, Don was promoted to the rank of SP4. He also earned the distinction of Browning Automatic Rifleman. Don served proudly in the U.S. Army until he was mustered out at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, after his tour of duty in Germany ended.
Don returned to Kansas to finish his education in the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. As a Senior, he was inducted into the Gamma Sigma Delta International Honor Society of Agriculture. He graduated in 1962 with a B.S. in Agriculture Economics and elected to continue his education at K-State with a Research Assistantship. He completed his Master’s Degree in Agriculture Economics in 1964.

It was during this time at K-State that he met and married his wife of 52 years, Patricia (Proshek) Haberer. He remained dedicated to these three passions—Pat, farming, and the Wildcat—for the rest of his life.
Don started his post-K-State career in December of 1963 as a County Extension Agent in Hall County, Nebraska. In addition to his work with 4-H and extension programs, he served as a panel member for the Agricultural Cooperative Training for Managers and Directors, sponsored by the University of Nebraska Extension, Nebraska Coop Council, and the Omaha Bank for Cooperatives.
Don and Pat welcomed a son and a daughter to their family while living in Grand Island, Nebraska.
.
Don and family returned to Russell County in 1966 when Don accepted a position as Vice President and Loan Officer at the Russell State Bank. He held this position until he left to become a full-time farmer on December 31, 1979. Don and Pat welcomed their third child, a son, to the family during their early years in Russell. From 1980 until his retirement, Don farmed in Paradise Township, continuing another generation of Haberer family farming in Russell County. During these years and well into his retirement, Don also worked in Real Estate, Appraisal, Personal Property Valuation and was a long-time member of Kansas Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. He served as the President of KSFMRA in 1984, besides chairing several conferences and serving on the Board of Directors for six years. In addition to his Real Estate career, he worked for 10 years with McKinley Auction Service.
.
Dedicated to his family and community, Don’s eye was always on the future. He gave freely of his time and talent in his community. He was active with Extension and 4-H in Russell County, serving for six years on the Russell County Fair Association Board of Directors and six years on the Russell County Extension Council. He served two three-year terms on Russell Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, including two years as Chairman. He served two terms on the Board of Directors of Agco, Inc., including three years as Secretary and three years as President. He served two terms on the Russell City Council and two terms as a Commissioner for Russell County. He was a founding member of the Russell County Economic Development Committee and served three terms on the Board of Supervisors for the Russell County Soil Conversation District. Many who knew Don knew him as a practical businessman and forthright adviser. To the end, he took a lively interest in history, science, genealogy, and politics. He was as comfortable discussing world affairs as local affairs. He read widely and instilled the love of education in his children. He took great pride in the feats of his predecessors, always recognizing the efforts of those who came before him and paying tribute to them by continuing their successes. After retirement, Don and Pat were fortunate to be able to travel, exploring the world and making or renewing connections amongst friends and family. He discovered and joined the Berlin U.S. Military Veterans Association. Don was a life-time member of the National Rifle Association, the Kansas Rifle Association, and the Kansas State University Alumni Association.

TRIP UP NORTH - LOIS (ROUNKLES) BONAR (CLASS OF 1960) & PENNY (ROUNKLES) LOKER (CLASS OF 1964)

Lois and Penny took a trip up north
to Minnesota and Canada a few weeks ago.
Penny sent this . . . .
My sister Lois and I just returned home from our trip "north" on October 21st. We were gone 12 days and had a blast !!!!! Our trip started having lunch with a cousin we found on facebook, Mary Fern Rounkles. We had lunch with her at Chillicothe, Missouri on her birthday. That night we stayed in Omaha at our Aunt Shirley Killian's house. Had a great visit and breakfast with her !!!!
Then we were ...on our way to South Dakota, & North Dakota. Stayed all night at Fargo North Dakota. They were in a tornado watch and my cell phone wouldn't work.
The 3rd day after lunch we arrived at our cousin's house, Carol Katie Helvey Otto and husband Larry, in Minnesota. We had a great time at their log house, and had some great food. Got to go to " The Shed". It has 90 cars stored in that building. Some great cars and some antique cars and pick-ups!!!!! Warroad, Minnesota is also the home of Marvin Window's Toured the welcome center at Marvin windows .
Then on to International Falls, Minnesota, into Canada. Got postcards and magnets of all the states & Canada that we visited.
In eastern Minnesota we visited the Split Rock light house !!!! We got to go clear to the top of the light house. We also saw a movie of how it was build on the rock cliff.
On to Wisconsin and Michigan, brought some great cheese, apples and pears home from Wisconsin.
Saw a lot of beautiful trees and leaves on our trip-- fall is beautiful in that part of the country !!!!!

It is important to remember that not everyone is surrounded by large wonderful families. Some have problems during the holidays and sometimes are overcome with great sadness when they remember the loved ones who are not with them. And, many people have no one to spend these times with and are besieged by loneliness. We all need caring thoughts and loving prayer right now. Please pray for all those who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, worries of any kind and just need to know that someone cares.
Love & Prayers to all my Paradise Blog readers and their families.
Love & Prayers to all my Paradise Blog readers and their families.

From Vada (Dwinelle) Krumwiede
In reading today's Salina Journal,
they had letters from readers on what they are thankful for. I read them all
and one short one thanked God's love letter and the Bible. It is the best
instruction manual we have. The one I read and was prompted to send on to you
and the Paradise Blog is from a woman being thankful for the adoption of their
son. She formerly lived in Paradise and now
lives in Russell. It was from Ruth Bartlett. She is thankful for the
nine-month old boy they loved from first sight and the wonderful grandchildren
he gave them.
God's blessings to each and every
one of you for Thanksgiving and for the holidays and years to
come.

A Bounty of Gratitude
What are you thankful for? As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, the Journal asked readers to reflect on what they are thankful for in their lives. Whether it’s the blessing of family or friends, a second chance at life or love, or gratefulness for the ordinary freedoms we sometimes take for granted, each had a personal reason to show thanks during the season and throughout the year.

Ruth's Thankfulness . . . .
Happy, Happy Times
"There is no doubt that one phone call made me and my husband two of the happiest people on earth. The call was from an adoption agency saying they had a 9-month-old baby boy for adoption, and would we be interested? Needless to say, we dropped everything and drove the 90 miles to see this baby. What a charmer! We loved him at first sight. "Now, some 50
years later, we are still most thankful for the wonderful, thoughtful young man he became, and later for the awesome grandchildren he provided to us. At the time of the adoption, we lived on a ranch at Paradise. Happy, happy times."

A comment from Vada (Dwinelle) Krumwide
From Vada . . . .
I had not looked at the Paradise
Blog for some time, but took the time today to do so. I read the comments about
my brother and Randall Houser and Ronnie Thompson. I think about Marvin and all
those who have passed away from time to time. A tragedy like this never goes
away from one's memory bank. Memories like this will always be with us. When
we were all home yet, I don't know what Marvin had been doing but his face was
blackened with soot or dirt. He asked me to wipe off his face. When I thought
I was done, he opened his eyes and he looked like a raccoon. He finished the
job. Marvin also built the folks a garage that was used for quite some time.
It took the place of the garage attached to the barn. He spent four years in
the Air Force, stationed at the base at Bangor , Maine .
I might add that any song should
not be taken the wrong way. "How Great Thou Art" was sung for the memory of
one's loved one and may have been chosen because the deceased liked it as one of
their favorites. There are many great hymns that are special. One is saddened
that a loved one has died and should remember them when the song is sung. I
hope this helps.
I am the only living child of my
parents, Ray and Edith Dwinelle. Marvin was killed in a car accident; Betty
died from cancer and my younger sister, Sharon, is also deceased.

I was to young to know those that
were involved - was just an 8 yr old 4th grader, a month short of a 9 yr old at
the time.
I do remember hearing about the
accident, but could never place where it happened. From what I remember, they missed a curve & a tree limb took the top of the car off.
Of course everyone my age knows where they were when hearing about Kennedy 50 yrs ago ;).
Appreciate your blog.

A comment from Duane Cronn. Thank You Duane.
From Duane . . .
Mark Harrell is an
all time favorite person of mine. He
called me little George and he loved to tease me. When I was in high school I would sleep in,
and would be late for school. One day
Mother was working part time at the Post Office, and told Mark about my habits,
and he wanted to know where my bedroom was.
Mom told him and Mark came outside my bedroom, pounded on the window and
yelled real loud that the house was on fire.
It got me up. I was always trying
to get something on him but never was sharp enough. He went with a school teacher (I believe they
called her Freddie) for several years and I think she taught school at
Fairport. Mark had got a newer car and I
saw Mark and his lady friend in Russell, and I asked him where he got his old
wreck from. He said oh she teaches
school at Fairport. I didn’t have
anything else to say, and she told Mark you really embarrassed that boy. He just laughed. We miss him. Duane
