I am just guessing by looking at facebook, but I am thinking that Karen (Hudnall) Jakub (Class of 1960) and Connie (Hudnall) Jahnke (Class of 1962) are celebrating both of their birthday's at once.  Their birthday's are Oct. 2 and Oct 10th.
Connie came back to Kansas and they seemed to spend a lot of time in Buhler, Kansas at Lavon's Bakery. 
They both agree - Yummy Home Cooking! 
I'm sure we all agree - Beautiful Sister's!

This is what they posted.

His family had a fun reception at KCI when he arrived home. Then when they arrived home the neighbors and Jeff's family had "Welcome Home" signs and yellow ribbons up and down their street with flags on the driveway.

Over 30 friends in the neighborhood were lining the streets as Jeff and his family drove on to their street. Their house was decorated with posters made by his 3 boys and his wonderful wife.

What a fabulous homecoming for Jeff!

DELBERT LANDIS MEMORIAL

Delbert Eugene Landis

1916-2013

Delbert (Deb) Eugene Landis, 97, Wichita, formerly of Fairport went to be with his heavenly father and his bride of nearly 71 years on Monday, October 07, 2013, at the Life Care Center of Wichita.

He was born March 16, 1916, in Rose Hill to David Delta and Alta Mary (Gagan) Landis. His family moved to Fairport, Kansas in 1925 where he attended grade and high school. He was a pumper for Sohio Oil Company (Standard Oil of Ohio) until his retirement in 1975. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving at the end of WWII and a member of the American Legion.

He married Veta Lorene Robertson on September 7, 1940 and they lived in Fairport until 2002 when they moved to Russell until 2011. They then moved to Wichita to be near their daughter Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 71 years, Veta, his parents, 4 brothers, Waldo, Francis (Jiggs), Ardine and Russell, one sister Talma. He was also preceded in death by 2 sons, D. Charles and Delmar Landis.

Survivors include his daughter Virginia Maddox and husband Kenneth, Wichita: son Donald Landis, Bethany, OK; three grandsons David Maddox, Dale Maddox and David Landis; one granddaughter Denise Maddox; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and many friends.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. Burial will be in the Fairport Cemetery, located eleven miles north of Gorham, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com

Our hearts and our prayers go out to Don (Class of 1963) and Virginia (Class of 1961). 
This has been such a difficult 2 years for them.

 This photo was taken a few months ago.  I have been waiting to get an original photo (since this is a newspaper picture and is fuzzy) but I haven't followed through all my leads to get a picture.

JEFF HAGERMAN (CLASS OF 1990) IS BACK IN THE USA

Jeff's homecoming back in the USA.

Sara met him as he got off his plane.
How beautiful! 

Thank You Jeff for serving our country

and

Thank You Lord for bringing him safely home.

 

Jeff went to Gulf Port in Nov. for training (for Afghanistan).  He got to go home for Christmas, but then left again to finish his training at Gulf Port.  He left for Afghanistan in March and has been there all this time.  Over 200 military guys & gals came back to Norfolk at the same time he did. 
Jeff and Sara have 3 boys and this was a busy time for her - being a Mommy and Daddy and keeping up with them.  She seems very efficient and does everything with pride.

Jeff and Sara have been doing some sight seeing and visiting scenic places.

They had fun at Busch Gardens, had dinner at Captain George's Seafood Restaurant in Virginia Beach with their Uncle Bobby Ross, and at 2:00 pm-10-05-13 they were outside the gates at the White House, with some of his other See Bee buddies, protesting the initial closing of military sites to our American Military. So sad to see that our Military - whom we are so proud of and Thankful for - have NO influence on decisions like that. Our Military are taking out many years of their lives to keep us safe at the same time that our government is acting like a bunch numbskulls.  Shame on them!

Friday night: Supper was at Marvin`s daughters house [Rachelle] then we went to the horse races at Fairmont Horse Races.  Penny said she won $4.00 at the races.  Lois and Penny both gave me information about the reunion but Lois didn't say anything about winning any money.

Saturday: In St. Louis.  We toured the "Arch,"  the "Old Courthouse."  had lunch at the Spaghetti Factory  and toured the Anheuser-Bush  Brewery.  {free beer after the tour}

Sunday:  Marvin cooked out on his "well-used grill".  He cooks out all the time! They were able to meet new relatives and eat a lot of great food.

After a delicious lunch, the kids were busy playing,  adults visiting and we all enjoyed playing our famous card game "Nertz."

"The Hutchcraft cousins had a great reunion in Jewell, KS on the weekend of August 9, 10 and 11.

Friday was spent sight-seeing in the area. We visited Happy Days Diner in Lincoln, Sylvan Grove (briefly), the Garden of Eden, Flush Plaza and Flying Pig Studio in Lucas, Fossil Station Museum, Meridy's, the Dream Theater and the A&W Root Beer in Russell, Mt. Hermon Cemetery and the water tower in Paradise. Tom Maupin was very kind to take our picture at the water tower. Both the cemetery and the water tower were very nicely kept.

On Saturday we had a catered meal at noon in the Jewell Community Center with visiting, passing (and retiring) the moonshine jug traveling trophy and sharing early Christmas memories.

Those remaining on Sunday attended Jewell Methodist Church, had lunch and departed.

My cousin, Linda, of Jewell asked me about a grocery store that was in the middle of the block on the same side of the Main Street as Brown Store. She remembered the lady in the store being so nice to her as a little girl. After putting our heads together we think maybe this was Smith's Store. But we don't know anything about who ran it, her family, where they lived, etc.

Then I sent another email with the Paradise Blog link. I forget that everyone does not have the Paradise Blog icon on the desk top or in their favorites.

"Thanks for the kind note. Wondered for a minute what it was about. You will note that the picture is probably a good 10 yrs old...but what the heck. I stopped getting my picture taken a long time ago.   I pray the both of you are doing well. Best Van"

We were glad to know that he is still using his older pictures. Made us feel much better.  (smiling)

2013 Alumni Award Recipients Announced

Each year, the Fort Hays State University Alumni Association presents accomplished alumni, friends, students and faculty with awards in honor of their achievements and/or service. This year’s recipients, six alumni and one friend of Fort Hays State University, will be honored at the Alumni Awards and Recognition Banquet Friday, Oct. 4, during Homecoming celebrations.

Alumni Achievement Award, established in 1959, honors graduates who have made outstanding and unselfish contributions in service to their community, state, or nations as citizens, in chosen career fields, or through philanthropic work. It is the Association’s highest recognition of its graduates.

Van R. Hoisington, Austin, Texas, graduated from FHSU in 1970 with an M.S. in business administration. His B.A. in oral communications was from the University of Kansas. He is the founder, president and CEO of Hoisington Investment Management Co. (HIMCO), which opened in 1980. It is the sub-advisor for Wasatch-Hoisington U.S. Treasury Fund, which has been ranked No. 1 among bond managers for its rate of return on unleveraged, 100-percent U.S. Treasury bond portfolios. He has been recognized by Louis Rukeyser as one of the top fixed income investors. HIMCO is also in the top 1 percent in performance results for fixed-income managers for the last decade.
Hoisington has been featured in Institution Investor, Smart Money, The New York Post, Pensions & Investments, Fortune Magazine, CNNMoney.com, Barron’s and many other financial publications for his investment success. He has twice been featured in Forbes Magazine as an outstanding bond and mutual fund manager, has been a frequent speaker at Grant's Investment Conference and has been a special guest on the PBS show Louis Rukeyser's Wall Street Week. "We don't have any of our photographers pictures back yet and the girls didn't take pictures because they were to busy keeping things going.    
Just a short run down----    
The meal started at 6:00.  We served a hot roast with potatoes, green beans, coleslaw, pickles and homemade bread.   We served 275.  

The reception was a 3 tiered cake that was duplicated like the one we had 50 years ago along with sheet cakes.  Tea and lemonade, nuts and mints. 

The band was Jimmy Dee and the Destinations.   They play all the old songs we grew up with.  If you didn't want to dance it was just fun to listen. 

All in all we had a great time.   You don't know how many friends you really have until you have a celebration like this.
