Cora Agnes (Shaffer) Sims, 94, died on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011
at Salina Regional Health Center. She was born on her parents' farm in Russell County near the small town of Waldo. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence R. "Larry" Sims, her parents Clarence A. and Lola E. (Dunkel) Shaffer, five sisters: Louise Booth, Wilma Johnson, Elizabeth "Betty" Funk, Fern Shaffer and Vivian Ganoung, two half brothers: Lloyd and Earl Shaffer, one brother: Charles H. Shaffer and two nephews Lloyd Funk and Dennis Johnson.
She leaves her son and daughter-in-law, Richard E. and Ruth Ann Sims, two grandsons and their families, Tracy and Stacey Sims, Caitlyn, Joshua, Jacob and Ethan Sims; Marty and Melissa, Corey and Gabe Sims. Also remaining are one sister and brother-in-law, Patricia "Pat" and Lloyd Quinn, one sister-in-law Carol Rose Shaffer, and many nieces, nephews, students and friends.

Cora Agnes Shaffer graduated from the Paradise Dell (rural school), Russell High School and Fort Hays State College. She began her teaching career right after her graduation from high school and continued for 43 years. She married Lawrence R. Sims in 1939. To his union, one son Richard E. Sims was born in 1941.

In 1981 Cora Agnes worked in the Banner Clothing Store in Salina and then began working in the Bridal Cake Shop in Salina where she baked and decorated many cakes and taught decorating classes.

Her husband died March 6, 1996. She continued living on the farm and decorating cakes. She retired in 2000. She was a dedicated teacher, a 4-H leader, farmer and housewife. She was president of the Russell County Teachers Association for two terms, a NEA Delegate for four terms, and worked as a board member of K.S.T.A. She is a life member of NEA, KSTA and Retired Teachers. She was also a member of the Gamma Epsilon, and the Hedville Ladies Club. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She loved life and always tried to do her best, to treat others as she wanted to be treated.

Visitation will be held Friday, December 9, 2011 from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, with the family present from 6 pm - 8 pm.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Salina. Burial will follow at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 901 E. Neal, Salina.

1. You were a sophomore (probably in H.S.) in 1969.
2. You were about the same age as Jim Harrell. He graduated from Paradise H.S. in 1971.
3. You probably didn't graduate from Paradise H.S. because you don't actually know me very well.
Hopefully, if you would have been one of my students, you would remember me. :o)
4. You evidently played on town team basketball, but we don't have names for those that played.

"Onnalee, I first met Glen when I went to a KSU game for band day and later, for cheerleader day, the year I was a senior in high school. At that time, they actually gave Willie the microphone and let him lead some cheers. He wore the old "furry" head, before the new Powercat was introduced. Thanks for posting, its always fun to tell other KSU fans that I married Willie!"

I have received 3 comments from "Anonymous" asking if Glen Strecker was Willie the Wildcat.

I have made it a practice to not post Anonymous comments but as soon as I received the first comment from "Anonymous" I sent the comment to Glen and Devin. Devin quickly responded and said that his Dad (Glen) was Willie the Wildcat.
I asked him for pictures and a story. I think he is having his Mom and Sister work on that for us.

This morning I received the 3rd comment from "Anonymous". I have decided that it does sound like the "real thing" and I thought everyone would enjoy it. Here it is . . . .

"Was curious about the Willie Wildcat.
GoPowercat board had a question about the first KSU FB game attended.
Mine was Band Day as a sophomore in Oct 69 against Iowa St & remember Rhonda going up to the rail to meet someone. May disrember the Willie stuff, but you would have made a great one. You could be kind of a clown when playing town team basketball ;).
Went back the following week with the Natoma Football team to see the OU 59-21 game.
Anyway, that is how I remember it ;).

CHESTER & ELSIE ROUNKLES FAMILY REUNION WAS SEPTEMBER 3rd & 4th

Family members came from 4 states to attend the "Chester and Elsie Rounkles Family Reunion" on September 3 and 4, 2011, at Russell, Kansas.

A "BBQ" supper at 6:00 P.M. was enjoyed by all. They spent the day and evening visiting, taking pictures, playing basketball, tossing bean bags, and reminiscing.
.
Sunday they went to Paradise and visited the "ole family farmstead". They especially had fun "walking the creek" and then touring Paradise. Some of the family then went to Lucas to see "The Garden of Eden". Our cousin was the tour guide!

Kathryn Marie Simpson passed away peacefully on the night of September 6, 2011 at the age of 95 with her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter by her side. She was born March 24, 1916 in Paradise, Kansas, the daughter of John T. and Catherine Marie (Murphy) Harrell, Sr. She grew up in the Paradise area and attended schools there, graduating from Paradise High School. She attended Ft. Hays State College receiving a degree in education. Kathryn taught in elementary schools in Kansas and Wyoming, off and on for 13 years, before becoming a full time mother and homemaker.
.
Kathryn married R.D. Simpson on November 8, 1953 in Salina, Kansas. With that marriage she gained two adopted sons, Robert David and John Jay Simpson. The marriage was blessed with the arrival of a third son, Thomas H. Simpson in February 1956. The family moved to Wyoming in 1963, with 4 years in Casper and then in Glenrock, WY. Kathryn resided in Glenrock, living independently at home, until September 2007, when at the age of 91, she moved to Bozeman, to be closer to her son, Tom, granddaughter, Jennifer, and great grandson, Devin. While living in Bozeman at Aspen Pointe and then at Birchwood, she enjoyed many new friendships among the other residents and staff. At the time of her death, Kathryn was living at the Spring Creek Inn, surrounded by the wonderful and caring staff.
.
While living in Wyoming, Kathryn was a 25 year volunteer at the Natrona County Hospital filling various needs. She was active in many civic organizations, including 50 years with Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi and the PEO Sisterhood. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Casper until her death, but when she could no longer drive to Casper by herself, she began attending the Christ Episcopal Church in Glenrock.
.
In her younger years, Kathryn cherished the time spent with her family along with playing the piano, bowling and traveling. She enjoyed all music and had a fondness for the Lawrence Welk Show until the end. Kathryn enjoyed the countless activities and gathering with her family and many friends in Eastern Star, Beta Sigma Phi and PEO.
.
Kathryn is survived by her sons, Thomas (Ann) Simpson, of Bozeman, Robert (Mary Sue) Simpson of Casper, WY and John (Miriam) Simpson of Whitefish, MT; granddaughter, Jennifer Simpson; and great-grandson, Devin Mosness, of Bozeman, MT; and out of state grandchildren, Luke (Linda) Drury, Kendra Drury, Jean Marie Neumann, Daniel Simpson and Darin Simpson.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Elna Margaret Simpson; her brother, John T. Harrell, Jr. and his wife, Doris Zelma (Wright) Harrell.

Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., Monday, Sept. 12 at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 P.M. Burial will immediately follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Glenrock, WY at a later date.

50 YEARS AGO TODAY - THE NEW PARADISE GRADE SCHOOL OPENED

50 years ago the new Paradise grade school opened.
78 students were enrolled.

Frances Mahoney was the principal and teachers were Louise Helscher, Virginia Robertson, Vesta Henery, and Helen Hoisington (part-time).

Jim Harrell started 3rd grade that year and Mrs. Robertson was his teacher.

LAWRENCE FINCH'S 100TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Lawrence Finch celebrated his 100th birthday, August 13, with a weekend of events including a family reunion dinner followed by an open house for family and friends at the Fossil Creek Inn banquet hall. Hundreds of well wishers traveled from near and far to give tribute.

Finch was born August 13, 1911 south of Natoma, Kansas. Until recently he was a long time resident of both Natoma and Paradise. He now resides with his daughter Dixie Eggleston, Liberty, Missouri.

Born August 13, 1911 south of Natoma, Kansas, Finch experienced 18 United States Presidents beginning with William Howard Taft at the turn of the century.

I received an email and the following pictures from Dixie. She said . . . .

"Dad wasn’t really feeling to good that day and had to leave for about an hr and came back in at around 2:30. He was pretty weak so we had a wheel chair for him. Then Sat. night he fell and we had to have the ambulance take him to the hospital as he really bumped his head and had a cut above his eye. He was so dehydrated they pumped him full of fluids for a couple of days. We did get him home back here Monday. He isn’t doing very good. If you need anything else let me know. Dixie"

Sunday worship at the United Methodist Church in Paradise brought family and friends for a special message by guest Lay Pastor Dennis Finch formerly of Natoma. Preaching from the Gospel of Matthew coupled with life experiences, he honored his uncle Lawrence Finch who celebrated his 100th birthday the previous day, August 13. Family and friends enjoyed the service followed by an ice cream social. The event also brought together life long friends and former Prophet Band members, Dennis Finch of Beloit, Gene Angel and Dan Hoisington, Paradise. The Prophets, a regional band during the era of The Beatles, played throughout much of the 1960's before disbanding. Finch now pastors two churches: First Baptist Church of Barnard and Simpson Community Church in Simpson. Angel and Hoisington are members of their home church in Paradise, Kansas."

"Dennis gave a wonderful sermon (which I know would be very hard in your own almost home-town) about wanting to see all of us – his friends and cousins in heaven. And he gave the message of salvation.

Dennis told many stories of playing basketball with Glen Strecker, Gene Angel, & Dan and how they beat Natoma in basketball that year of 1965, I think! Do you remember it? Any way Dennis was a great ball player himself (however, he didn’t mention that)! He just explained how the Natoma team could not hold down that Paradise team and got beat that year. Of course we all enjoyed hearing about that!!! Then Dennis mentioned a few of his sins: one of which he came to Paradise (probably with other guys from Natoma, tho he didn’t mention that) and stole our Paradise Pirate – took it to Natoma and thought it was so great that he’d captured the Pirate! But Mr Rogers, Natoma principal, had Dennis in his office the next day WIth THE PIRATE – let Dennis borrow his pickup and he had to bring the Pirate back to Paradise.
Do you remember any of this? Ask Dan about it OK – he may remember other funny stories about Dennis too! Janette"

died August 15, 2011

.He was born Oct. 24, 1941
to Delbert and Veta Landis in Fairport, KS.
He was a U.S. Postal Carrier in Bethany
for over 30 years
and was known as “Good Time Charlie”.
He enjoyed fishing, eating with his brothers, good times,
and was a lifelong member of the
National Assoc. of Letter Carriers.

Preceded in death by his mother, he is survived by his father, Delbert Landis;
son, David Landis;
brothers, Don and Delmar Landis;
sister, Virginia Maddox;
grandchildren, Erin, Eileen, David, Maddison, Ellen and Zinnia Belle;
and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be Friday, August 19, 10:00am at Mercer-Adams Chapel.

DALE ROLAND POST

Dale Roland Post, 88, Russell,

died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011

at St. John's Care Center, Victoria.

Dale was born December 12, 1922 in Paradise, Kansas -
son of Clifford and Ethel Pearl (Swartz) Post.
He grew up in the Paradise and Waldo areas and graduated from Waldo High School in 1940.

Dale served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war he returned to the Russell and Waldo area where he has lived ever since.

Dale was united in marriage to Della D. Sanders on May 26, 1945 in Russell, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children; Kenneth, Glenda and Gerald. They lived in Bethany, Oklahoma during the 1050’s but the rest of their marriage has been in Russell.

Dale worked in the oil field before he started working for the city of Russell driving one of the trucks. He retired in 1982. He also ran the Russell County Landfill for several years and was in charge of the Russell County Food Pantry. In his spare time he did metal salvage, lawn care service and snow removal and collecting anything that had a Pepsi lego.

Dale was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church of Russell. He also belonged to the Russell American Legion.

Surviving family include his wife of 66 years Della of the home;
sons, Kenneth Post and wife Ruth of Enid, Oklahoma and Gerald Post of Hutchinson, Kansas; daughter, Glenda Hammerschmidt and husband Verlin of Victoria, Kansas;
three grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and two great-great grandsons.

This includes the 2 houses that are just out side of the south city limits. We need some new bodies in town however I believe all houses are occupied. Several have been demolished to keep anyone from the Emporia area from moving in.

Lawrence Finch was born just south of Natoma on the Harsh place in Rooks county. He is the oldest son of Gavin and Pearl (Clair) Finch. He met his wife , Nellie Sanders , when she was teaching at a country school. Lawrence's little brother and sister was in Nellie's school. They married March 2, 1929 and was married almost 75years when she passed away about two weeks before their anniversary.

Lawrence supported his family by farming and when the dirty 30’s hit he moved his family to Arizona and got a job in the gold mines there. Norma was just a baby when they moved out and Dixie was born in Oatman Arizona 1937. They returned to Ks when Dixie was about 4. Lawrence had a few small jobs but ended up working for Sohio.. He retired from Sohio which became B P. He and Nellie moved up south of Natoma on a little farm. They later moved to Natoma, but Lawrence kept the farm for awhile. He and Nellie had a small camper and traveled quite a bit.

These are Norma's children and grandchildren.

Lawrence played polo on the Sohio team and he also had greyhounds and loved to coyote hunt.

Nellie had a stroke and so Lawrence took care of her, although she did recover from the stroke. They went to live with Dixie (Eggleston) in the winter and at their home in the summer. Nellie died at the age of 95 and Lawrence was 93. He continued staying with Dixie through the winter then he decided he wanted to learn how to bowl. They bought him his own ball and bag and he did pretty good. His highest score was about 128. Because of his failing health, he had to quit. Dixie, Lawrence and Norma did some traveling. They are so thankful the time they had with herNorma at that time.

He has been with Dixie now since Norma died and they sold all he had last summer. They just didn't think he could stay by himself anymore. He is still doing pretty good.

There have been 18 presidents in Lawrence Finch's lifetime.
They started with William Howard Taft (1909-1913).

Rogers, Arkansas.

He and his family were there on business,

when Elmer became ill and passed away a few days later.

He was born on October 29, 1953 in Plum City, Wisconsin, the son of Dale and Ruby (Bignell) Rageth. He was a longtime resident of the Waldo and Russell areas before leaving the state of Kansas in order to travel and work construction with his brothers. He was a skilled carpenter who loved using his skills to build homes, businesses as well as other wood working projects. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and close friends.
.Elmer is survived by two daughters, Lisa Schreiner of Russell and Marina Rageth of Topeka; two grandchildren Lillian and Olivia; six sisters Dorothy Litchfield, Marie Gavin, Irene Hatt, Betty Gooden, Mary Doody, Nancy Hammett and six brothers Ed, Glen, David, Larry, John and Dale, also by several nephews and nieces.

"I have been having trouble with my computer this spring so have not been able to keep up with all of the Paradise news. I really enjoy it. You do a great job finding information.
When we lived in Fairport and taught in Paradise there was a man living in Paradise named "Spence". I don't remember his first name but he died in 1954. Do you or anyone remember anything about him? We have just found out that he was our son-in-law's grandfather.
I have been interested in Millard's carvings. I would really like to see them sometime. I have a cousin living in Emporia so maybe we can visit someday.
We are doing as well as can be expected for "old folks". We really don't get along very well in this heat, but fall will come.Onnalee keep up the good work. Thank you so much. One day soon I will get my computer up and running properly.

Veta was born September 23, 1922, in Portis, Kansas, to Charles May and Sadie (Ramage) Robertson. She married Delbert E. Landis on September 7, 1940. Veta lived in Osborne and Russell counties nearly her entire life. She attended the Diamond School District near Covert, Kansas and also Covert, Kansas High School. She received her GED in 1975. She moved to Fairport, Kansas in 1939 and moved to Russell, Kansas in April of 2002.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 71 years, Delbert of Wichita; her four children, Charles of Bethany, Oklahoma, Virginia Maddox and her husband, Kenneth of Wichita, Kansas, Donald of Bethany, Oklahoma, and Delmar of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; a sister, Betty Fraizer of Shreveport, Louisiana; four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great, great granddaughter.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 20, 2011,
at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home,
20th and Pine in Hays, Kansas.
Burial will be in the Fairport Cemetery north of Gorham, Kansas.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday

from 2 until 5 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 until the service time.

Onnalee is going to have surgery Tuesday, June 21st. We will be going to KC the 20th for some pre-op conferences, spend the night, then she will have her surgery the next day.

This is a surgery that she is going to need, but the surgeon's in Emporia & Topeka did not want to do it.

When Onnalee had her liver transplant she had to be opened up numerous times to clean out infection that had taken hold. The several surgeries which were emergency surgeries in nature left her muscle structure in her abdomen really compromised to the extent that now she has to deal with reoccurring hernias. This last hernia has made walking very difficult for her because muscular support in the abdomen has to be balanced with that in the back.

This may be pretty extensive as hernia surgeries go and of course, infection is still a concern with the drugs she has to take.

"Onnalee I am sending you the obituary for Joe Wiggins who died the first part of May. I didn’t see anything in the local papers about his death. I had an individual call me today, and she was at the Paradise Cemetery, and saw his grave. She was a friend of Joe’s and didn’t know he passed away. I don’t know if you knew Joe or not but he was a school administrator in Paradise years ago, and then left the area. He moved back to Paradise a few years ago, and lived here for a period of time. His wife Betty started having health problems and they wanted to move near health facilities in Salina, Kansas. They moved to Bennington, Kansas and she passed away a couple of years ago, and he started having serious health problems. He ended up in a nursing home before he died. Joe and Betty were great people.

I sent an email to Charles & Don and heard back from Don. He gave us an update on Charles. . . .

"Charlie, continues to become stronger, but it is a slow process.
He remains in a skilled nursing facility and I don't know how much longer he will be there.
You asked about the tornadoes last week, the storms that contained them went north and south of us about 20 to 30 miles apart. We dodged them again thankfully.

Thanks for writing and inquiring about Charlie."

Charles & Don, we continue to pray for both of you.
We realize that it IS a slow process to recover, but we are very Thankful that Charles is recovering and that you, Don, are close enough to be with him during this time.

Connie (Hudnall - Class of 1962) Jahnke's husband, Bill, was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, Creutzfeldt-Jakob, more commonly known as mad cow disease.
Bill's illness is the result of cancer and not tainted beef. This disease is very rare and it took quite a while for the doctors to diagnose it. He was moved yesterday to Casa de la Luz, a hospice facility in Tucson, where they live.

Connie met Bill in Tucson in the spring of 2009 and they were married that year in December. They have only been married 16 months.

A FEW FACTS ABOUT PARADISE, KANSAS USA

Paradise was founded in 1889.
.

Originally it was named Ivamar, who according to legend, was a beautiful and popular young woman in the city.
The city was renamed "Paradise" after a hunting expedition led by James Meade stumbled upon the village, having trekked through miles of burnt prairie. On the other side of a creek was green grass, which looked like a paradise to the hunters, and thus the name was changed.

Paradise is located at an elevation of 1,693 feet.
It lies in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains approximately 6 miles north of the Saline River on the north side of Paradise Creek, a tributary of the Saline, immediately west of the creek's confluence with Eagle Creek, which runs south along the city's east side Located in north-central Kansas 3.5 miles west of U.S. Route 281 on K-18. Paradise is approximately 127 miles northwest of Wichita, 233 miles west of Kansas City, and 15 miles north-northwest of Russll, the county seat.

As of the census of 2000, there were 64 people, 28 households, and 16 families residing in the city.

K-18, an east-west route, approaches Paradise from the northwest, then turns east north of the city. Paradise Road, a paved county road, enters the city from the south.

Paradise is home to several unique structures that were constructed from Post Rock Limestone. Early settlers to the area discovered that while there was a shortage of timber, limestone was plentiful, and therefore it was commonly used as a building material. It was also commonly used for fence posts. The watertower and the former Kennedy Hotel were recently added to the National Register of Historic Places and featured in an article in the Salina Journa.

AN UPDATE ON CHARLES LANDIS FROM DON

Charles is currently in a skilled medical facility to overcome a recent bout of pneumonia. He is obtaining occupational, physical and speech therapy to aid in his recovery. He is walking further everyday as he is becoming stronger. Once his strength has recovered to an acceptable level he will be moved to a rehab center and remain there until he is able to go home. When he is able to go home he will then begin his chemo treatments.
Charles' parents Delbert and Veta Landis keep in contact with him and his brothers Delmar and Don by telephone on a regular basis.

I received this from Norman about his and Iva's Mother. She died 3-25-11.

"Onnalee, I brought Mom, Elaine Laughlin, here to Redding, CA about 9 months ago so I could have her closer to me. She was living in an assisted living facility, Lavender Hills, when she became ill. She had been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Failure in January of 2011 and had been in the hospital for several days in Jan, again in Feb. and then the final time this month. She was in the hospital the final time for a little over three days and the last day and a half she was non-responsive. We talked to her and I really believe she could hear us but she was too weak to respond in any way. She passed peacefully and the "comfort care" that the hospital staff provided kept any pain she may have had to a minimum. Mom requested that we not have any formal services and that she be cremated in CA and shipped to her niece in NE for internment in the cemetery where her family has all been buried. So, we will carry out her wishes.

HENRY HOWARD SCOTT - RUSSELL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE - 1942

Henry Howard Scott,
passed away peacefully and with dignity
on
March 26, 2011
after a brief illness.
Howard was born in Russell County, Kansas
on
February 8, 1924
to
Jessie (Herron) Scott and Allen Ray Scott.
He graduated from Russell High School in 1942.

Howard was a WW II veteran, a member of the Greatest Generation. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Corps in 1943 where he flew as a radioman/gunner on a B-24 Liberator Bomber based in Brazil and England. He and his crew members hunted German submarines out on the open ocean. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Howard returned to Russell County after his military service where he began his lifelong connection with farming and ranching. On October 17, 1948, he married Vernita Bartlett and together they continued farming and ranching. To this union were born four children: Vickie, Rhonda, Greg and Denise. Howard and Vernita moved to Russell, Kansas in 1981. Despite living in town, Howard leased a few acres outside of Russell where he raised a few head of cattle maintaining his passion for the outdoors. Howard was preceded in death by Vernita in June, 2004 after fifty-five years of marriage.

Howard married Vicki Dougherty on April 22, 2006. Howard continued his enthusiasm for the outdoors with Vicki by landscaping their Russell home. He spent countless hours on their back patio sipping coffee and watching the birds. Howard worked part-time for the Russell Livestock Commission from 1948 to 2000. He was a fifty year member of the Paradise Pitch Club. He was an avid reader of western novels and loved to work crossword puzzles. He enjoyed spending time with his siblings and shared coffee many mornings with his oldest brother Rich. Howard was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Elks Lodge. Howard was a true patriot who loved his country.

His greatest legacy was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He never met a stranger and he shared his talents and riches freely with others. His connection to the earth, what it produces, and the life it sustains will always be remembered.

He is survived by his second wife, Vicki (Dougherty) Scott of Russell, Kansas; daughter, Vickie Elliott (husband Kendall) of Russell, Kansas; daughter, R. Lee Burkholder (husband Jeff) of Columbus, Ohio; son, Greg Scott (wife Debbie) of Salina, Kansas; Denise Hahn (husband Chris) of Olathe, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. Howard also has five siblings surviving: Richard Scott, Bessie Maranville, Ruth Bartlett, Don Scott and Carol Murphy. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vernita, his parents, a brother Glenn Scott, and a sister, Mary Ann (Scott) Melasecca.

A celebration of Howard’s life
was held at
11:00 A.M. March 30, 2011
at the
Paradise United Methodist Church in Paradise, Kansas
with
Pastor Sharon Thomas officiating.

Burial is in the Mt. Hermon Cemetery in rural Paradise.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the Russell County Veterans Memorial Flag Fund and sent in care of the mortuary.

Iva Byrd just called me and she wanted me to pass along that her and Norman's step mother, Elaine Laughlin, passed away this morning in Calif. She was 91.
Iva just got home from the hospital. They found out that a medicine she had been taking for a long time was causing her stomach to bleed. It was absorbing the blood droplets so they couldn't figure out where the blood was going. She thinks she is improving now.

Hi Onnalee,

I loved the blog about the Wylie Martin's today.
Do you have the Paradise Farmer on microfilm or fiche? And you have a list of mayors!!!! I knew there had to be some city records somewhere, but I never have time to check at the courthouse when we're in the area.

When you read about Ed Helms in the Farmer, he is my Grandma Hutchcraft's dad, so he is my great granddad. I believe he is a former mayor. I know he was a lawman for awhile.

So interesting that Mr. Martin was hired to supervise the Chinese RR workers.

Keep up the good work. Even if sometimes it is just obituaries we still need to know about them.

.Wylie and Clara Martin were married in 1905.

In 1909, they moved to Paradise.

Wylie was to work there as a Foreman in building the railroad that was coming to Paradise.

Many of the men building the railroad were Chinese and it was felt that Wylie could manage them well.

Wylie was a real go-getter. He worked as a carpenter, then operated an automobile service station and Ford agency which he built himself in Paradise with the help of his son. He then returned to carpentry.

By reading the Paradise Farmer, Wylie is recorded as doing most any job from setting up windmills to making cement forms to masonry. He was also involved with the WPA building of the Paradise water tower that stands on a corner of his land.

He also served in the Kansas State Guard 1917-1919.

I'm not sure of the time line of these, but according the the Paradise Farmer, Wiley started clerking at the Harrell Hardware Store in 1920.

He was mayor of Paradise for a number of years.

(In one of my books about Paradise, I have a list of all the mayors. Do you think I could find it now? No! But, I will add the years at a later date, hopefully.)

Clara was always busy with quilting, embroidering and crocheting. She crochet the dress that she was buried in. (Shown in the last picture above.)

She was also a sharpshooter who would go on the jackrabbit kills with the men.

He was a milker of cows - using a one-legged stool that he would pivot all around on in order to accomplish his task.

Clara and Wylie are buried in Mt Hermon cemetery - just to the right of the entrance to it.

Wylie apparently bought some of the first lots. Their graves were dug by friends and neighbors as a mark of respect. Wylie never seemed to get over the idea of having to pay someone to dig a grave.

at the

Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Bobbie was born January 30, 1923 on the
family farm north of Paradise.
He was the only child of William J. and
Maude (Perkins) Robbins.
He grew up and attended country schools
in the Paradise area. He graduated from
Paradise High School in 1940.

Bobbie served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.
He was stationed in the Philippines.

Bobbie met, fell in love, and was united in marriage to Eulah Chatham on August 21, 1944 in Kansas City, Missouri.

This union was blessed with four children;
Harold, Cleta, Diana and William.

They made their home in the same home he was born in.

Bobbie was a dairy farmer and rancher his whole life. He continued the family tradition and managed the family farm. But most of all, Bobbie was a devoted husband and loving father.

As a boy, he was a member of the Paradise United Methodist Church. Later on in life he attended the Paradise Nazarene Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, horses, riding his three wheeler and telling stories.

Surviving family include:
his wife of 66 years, Eulah of the home;
daughters, Cleta Johnson and husband Al of Nikiski, Alaska and Diana Blosser and husband Darrell of Hays, Kansas;
sons, Harold Robbins and wife Mary of Yakutat, Alaska and William Robbins and wife Trina of Paradise, Kansas;
eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter-in-law, Betty Robbins.

Celebration of Bobbie’s Life
will be held at
11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 16, 2011
at the
Paradise United Methodist Church

Burial will follow at the Mt. Herman Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM.

A memorial has been established with the Nazarene Missions. Contributions and condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

died Thurs night (March 10th).

"Dad went to be with the Lord last night. He confessed Christ as his Savior in his last days and confirmed it with a squeeze of his hand in his last hours.
Mason (my grandson) said I'm glad he died well-- not glad but I'm glad he doesn't have to be in the nursing home any more, he didn't like it there.
He said what I had been thinking but to guilt ridden to voice. No more pain.
"Out of the mouths of babes!"

She also said that William is making the casket from wood on the farm. She mentioned that it is a big job but that was what William wanted to do for his Dad.

What a neat thing for William to do and I know Bob would be very proud of that.

SMALL TOWNS

It sounds just like Pardise, KS - USA!

Those who grew up in small towns will laugh when they read this. Those who didn't will be in disbelief and won't understand how true it is.

1) You can name everyone you graduated with.

2) You know what 4-H means.

3) You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. On Monday you could always tell who was at the party because of the scratches on their legs from running through the woods when the party was busted. (See #5.)

4) You used to 'drag' Main St.

5) You scheduled parties around the schedules of different police officers, because you knew which ones would bust you and which ones wouldn't.

6) You could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks knew how old you were (and if you were old enough, they'd tell your parents anyhow.) Besides, where would you get the money?

7) You knew which section of the ditch you would find the beer your buyer dropped off.

8) It was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town.

9) The whole school went to the same party after graduation.

10) You didn't give directions by street names but rather by references. Turn by Nelson's house, go 2 blocks to Anderson's, and its four houses left of the track field.

11) The golf course had only 9 holes.

12) You couldn't help but date a friend's ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.

13) Your car stayed filthy because of the dirt roads, and you will never own a white vehicle for this reason.

14) The town next to you was considered 'trashy' or 'snooty,' but was actually just like your town.

15) You referred to anyone with a house newer than 1955 as the 'rich' people.

16) The people in the 'big city' dressed funny, and then you picked up the trend 2 years later.

17) Anyone you wanted could be found at the local gas station or on Main Street.

18) You saw at least one friend a week driving a tractor through town or one of your friends driving a grain truck to school occasionally.

19) The gym teacher suggested you haul hay or pick rock for the summer to get stronger.

20) Directions were given using the only stop light as a reference.

21) When you decided to walk somewhere for exercise, 5 people would pull over and ask if you wanted a ride.

22) Your teachers called you by your older siblings' names.

23) Your teachers remembered when they taught your parents.

24) You could charge at any local store or write checks without any ID.

25) There was no McDonalds.

26) The closest mall was over an hour away.

27) It was normal to see an old man riding through town on a riding lawn mower.

28) You've peed in a wheat field.

29) Most people went by a nickname.

30) You laughed your butt off reading this because you know it is true.

I would not have wanted to be raised any other way!!!!

Thank you for the Paradise Educated Blog; it is great!!
I have been reading through it since the school reunion of last summer and it is very interesting and educational !!
I just wanted to make a comment on the Nov. 1, 2008, posting about the Boy`s Quartets and the fact that you couldn`t find your 1955 and 1957 school annuals!!!!! My sister , Joyce Rounkles Mello, was in the graduating class of 1957 and she said that her class did not make an annual for that year.............All the class money that they raised went to pay for their senior trip!!!!! I don`t know where they went but I suppose they all had a good time.
I don`t know about the 1955 annual but maybe they didn`t print one either????

RICHARD NEAL BOURN

Richard Neal Bourn, 84 of Gorham died Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at the Russell Regional Hospital in Russell, Kansas.

Richard was born May 21, 1926 in Paradise, Kansas the son of Elbert W. and Jenny May (Robins) Bourn. He grew up and attended schools in the Paradise area.

Richard served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a water tender 3rd class, maintaining the boilers on the USS Grayson while serving in the south Pacific.

Richard met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Della J. Treat in 1946 in Russell, Kansas. This union was blessed with five children; Jodi, James, Jerry, Janet and Richard. Della preceded Richard in death on November 9, 2005. The Bourn family lived in Idaho, Washington state and Minnesota before moving to the Gorham area.

Richard worked as a water well driller most of his adult life and retired in 1988.

Richard was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240 in Russell. He enjoyed being outdoors and fishing.

Surviving family include his sons, James Bourn and wife Joan of Gorham, Kansas, Jerry Bourn and wife Janet of San Diego, California and Richard Bourn and fiancée Tab of Colorado ; daughters, Jodi Hoppie and husband Mike of Minnesota and Janet Bourn of Wyoming ; sister Jenny Mothershead of Twin Falls, Idaho ; 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 1 sister.

A Memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has preceded the service. Condolences may be sent in care of Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, who is in charge of these arrangements.

Pat is having a MRI on her lower back on Mon to see what is going on with her. They know something is not right but they can't seem to figure out what it is.

"Charlie is doing okay, they had him sitting up yesterday and today the nurse took him out in the hall to walk him. That was encouraging to see that. He stated he thought he had already recovered some of his appetite.

As for the weather, we got about 6 inches of snow Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Without the proper road equipment it made it tough to drive for awhile. It was -5 this morning and next week it is to be about 70.

Hi Onnalee,
Thanks for the info about Charles Landis. I sent him an E-mail. We have not talked or seen each other since 1956. I went to the eighth grade in Fairport with Charles and our Freshman and half of our sophomore years in Paradise.
I had planned on going to the last Paradise reunion but I had cancer surgery
July 20th and that took over my life. Hopefully I was able to offer some encouragement to Charles. I have completed my chemo therapy and my last PET and CT scan Dec. 27th came back clean. I will have CT scans every three months for a while.
Cancer is a scary uncertain illness but it can be cured or at the least managed. Early detection along with no other issues are very key as to the effectiveness of treatment.
I tried to assure Charles that he will come thru this and live a long normal life. I am a survivor as are thousands and thousands of others. I have diffuse large B cell non hodgkins lymphomia. It can't be cured but it can be managed for a long time. It could come back at some time , if it does I will go thru the treatment again.
I read the Paradise blog and keep in touch with Dan Hoisington via e-mail daily.

He has to check in to the hospital at 8:00 am.

Our prayers continue to be with Charles as he is still waiting for his surgery.
He has had his surgery date canceled twice because of the weather. How hard that must be for him.
Preparing for surgery is such a hard process in itself, then having it canceled is such a let down.
Please continue to pray for strength for Charles during this time.

Charles' brothers, Don and Delmar, are with him. His son, from Ft Worth, has been with him but he drove home today. He had to drive the 180 mile trip on ice, which took 6 hours.

Our prayers are with Charles and his family as they continue to wait.

Almighty God, who gives strength to the weak and upholds those who might fall, give each of us the courage to do what is right, for those that trust in you have no need to fear.

Make us brave to face any danger which may now threaten us.

Give us the help that you have promised to those who ask it, that we may overcome our fears and go bravely forward.

Fill us with courage, that nothing which is our duty to do, may be too hard for is. Let us put our trust in your power and goodness.

I will probably have surgery first then radiation and chemo. I have the possibility of not surviving the surgery with my COPD. I will have good Dr.'s though.

Colon Cancer is Cancer is a malignant tumor that grows from the inner wall of the large intestine.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common lung diseases. It makes it difficult to breathe.

There are two main forms of COPD:
Chronic bronchitis, defined by a long-term cough with mucus
Emphysema, defined by destruction of the lungs over time.

Pauline Taggart, 88 of Phillipsburg and formerly of Waldo, Kansas died Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Phillips County Retirement Center in Phillipsburg, Kansas.

Pauline and her twin brother were born June 18, 1922 in Kenwood, Oklahoma. One of fifteen children, including five sets of twins, born to Bill and Nancy (Ketcher) Russell. She grew up and attended schools in the Oklahoma area.

Pauline met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Franklin Patterson Taggart on November 18, 1948 in Bentonville, Arkansas. This union was blessed with five children; Paulette, Charlette, Monette, Junette and Frank. Franklin preceded her in death on April 20, 1985.

Pauline was a devoted homemaker and wife. Due to Frank, Sr’s job, their family moved a lot, living in Grove, Oklahoma, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Kansas. They moved to the Waldo area in 1968.

Pauline attended the Penticostal Church in Oklahoma growing up. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, watching baseball, playing bingo and attending family reunions.

Surviving family include four daughters, Paulette Marez and husband Jerry of Phillipsburg, Kansas, Charlette Baker and husband Dorsey of Gainesville, Texas, Monette Terry of Waldo, Kansas and Junette Bealby and husband Phil of Mullinville, Kansas; son, Frank Taggart and wife Nancy of Kerrville, Texas; three sisters, Pearl Sitsler of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, Dorothy Dollarhyde of Mena, Arkansas and Maxine Madlock of Roseberg, Oregon; seven grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers, five sisters, grandson Earle Lee Terry and great grandchild Augustine Falcon.

Celebration of Pauline’s Life will be held Friday, February 4, 2011 at the Trinity Southern Baptist Church of Afton, Oklahoma with Pastor David Holland officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Afton. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM. "I was told mom's obituary was on the Blog. You do a nice job, Onnalee.
There is one addition that was brought to my attention after the obituary was proofed at the funeral home and was satisfactory with us. Since Mom was close to death, I had been typing up an obituary that told about her life and Paradise. All that needed to be done was to add the dates and time to it which made it easier for the funeral home. My big, huge goof was that I had failed to add Robert McNeal in as a son-in-law for survivors. He was married to my sister, Betty, for many years before she was taken with cancer. His name was added in for the program at the church.

The service went well and the food was delicious after returning from the cemetery.
The ladies did a fantastic job and we got to meet people and relatives we hadn't seen for some time."

Edith Viola (Paxton) Dwinelle
died

Friday, January 21, 2011, at Pinnacle Park.
She was 99-1/2 years old.

Edith, formerly of Paradise, Kansas was born to Alfred Crumley and Julia Lucretia (Andrews) Paxton at Natoma on July 24, 1911.

She married Ray Max Dwinelle on September 13, 1935 at Girard, Kansas. The couple celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary a few months before Ray passed away. The couple lived in Paradise most of their lives.

Edith was a homemaker and did babysitting (Spud and Beth Whitman of Paradise claimed she was their favorite sitter). She also cleaned the wholesale at Paradise, was a cook at the grade/high schools for a time, and substituted at the Central Telephone Office. She loved to cook and bake for her family (Ray took his lunch with him on the wholesale truck). At one time she operated the former Smith's grocery store. Edith spent numerous hours playing board games with her kids, putting puzzles together and playing bingo. When she wanted to take a wall out between the kitchen and dining room, Ray told her it couldn't be done. He came home from work one day and found it could be done. When she waxed the floors, her kids had fun putting on some old socks and shining it for her.

Before school began, she would purchase material and sew her girls their school clothes. You always knew what she was doing because you could smell the aroma of new cloth in the house and hear the sewing machine purring away. Their front yard was the hub of many softball games with Ray doing the pitching. A thorn tree was first base, the light pole was second base, and whatever they could find to put down was third base. Parents throughout Paradise knew where their kids were. Paradise had a neighborhood watch program back then and families didn't have cause for worry. The kids also loved her popcorn balls at Halloween and Edith made cookies for the paper boy, Danny Hoisington.

Their Dwinelle home was headquarters for many family dinners over the years with relatives, as their home was the "home place" of Ray's parents. After retirement, Ray and Edith moved to Salina for medical reasons and to be closer to their family. Edith was outgoing and enjoyed it when friends and family stopped by. Her last days were spent at Pinnacle Park Nursing and Rehabilitation. She loved the exercise class, playing bingo and skipbo. She also enjoyed her arts and crafts. The aides, nurses and staff were a great comfort to her.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray (5/23/97); son, Marvin (11/1/63); and daughter, Betty (1/6/93). Her four brothers, George, Jim, Dean and Ralph are also deceased.

Survivors are:
Daughters, Vada (Lynn) Krumwiede, Salina, and Sharon Leiker (Keyton Barker), Sun City West, Arizona.
Son-in-law, Robert McNeal (husband of Betty).
9 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren & 7 great-great grandchildren.

A celebration of Edith’s life will be held at Paradise United Methodist Church on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at 11 AM with Pastor Sharon Thomas officiating.

Burial will follow at Mt. Herman Cemetery in rural Paradise.

Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at the mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given for the sound system at the Paradise Methodist Church and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Myron Myron was born May 11, 1926 in Luray, Kansas the son of Vernon C. and Lelia (Whitman) Bartlett. He grew up in the Paradise area and graduated from Paradise High School.

Myron served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was stationed in the south pacific mainly on Guam where he was a carpenter’s mate with the Sea Bees.

Myron met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Ruth E. Scott on January 11, 1948 in Russell.

They made their home on a farm in the Paradise area.
This union was blessed with three children; Lonnie, Terri and Traci.

Myron was a farmer and rancher his whole life. He was proud to do it the cowboy way.
.
Myron was a member of the Paradise United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the Russell V.F.W. and the Russell Elks Lodge. He loved spending time with horses, roping, spending time at the sale barn and was a co-founder of the Paradise Pitch Club.

Surviving family include his wife of 62 years, Ruth of the home;
son, Lonnie Bartlett of Corpus Christi, Texas;
daughters, Terri Weinhold and husband Al of Wilson, Kansas and Traci Peterson of Lindsburg, Kansas; sisters, Reta Weller of Redding, California and Neva Anderson of Clay Center, Kansas;

PRAYERS FOR IVA (LAUGHLIN) AND JIM BYRD

Iva had surgery sometime ago.
I understand that it was possibly the first part of Dec.

She said . . .
"My hernia repair surgery went well. While Surgeon was telling Jim I would be ready to go home soon, they tell me I flatlined, not once, but twice. I ended up 3 days in the ICU and 2 days on the wing. I was released to come home on a Sunday night.

(I am guessing that she might have meant Dec. 19th)
I am so glad my faith is so strong and so real that I knew my Jesus was right there with me through it all. When I am able, they have a number of tests to run on me. This has been VERY HARD on Jim. We are getting some assistance thru home health care which is helpful."

Then on Dec. 26th, Iva wrote on facebook . . . .

"Sorry, not able to spend much time @ computer.

Surgery recovery going very well, some unrelated "hic-ups" have occured which is putting me into extra pain and difficulty.

So, I need all prayers I can get.
